IE7 didn't work. It installed fine, but none of the pages loaded.

IE6 worked, but it still asked me to install Flash; which I couldn't.  Yes, I did have the Flash option checked during installation.

I had the same issue. Running the installer a second time appeared to fix the problem. IE6 is now up and running.

sorry for the writer.. hahaha .. wine wont do the emulating of explorer with all it functions..as i would say to the writer stop giving wrong instruction.. thats masacring our linux'... i failed installing lots of apps using wine.. i cant believe you posted shit like this... wow.. buy me pc instead of posting useless "knowledge", thats damn thing for dummies

Any decent linux user would already know that under wine things are not perfect and that they work only patchily most of the times. But of course half knowledge mad dogs like you can never know that because you are more eager to bite at the heels of a person who is trying to help others. Go get a life and start posting something useful/helpful. And by the way, learn some English grammar and spelling before posting in English.

As for the author, I appreciate your effort to provide a solution, even if it is only approximate. I am sure your post has helped several developers and even normal users who need IE for some purpose, be it developing webapps or just browsing a IE only website. Please ignore fools and mad dogs and continue the good work.

Great write up! Just wanted to drop a note that

wget http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/downloads/ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
tar xvfz ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
cd cd ies4linux-*
./ies4linux

 Should read

wget http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/downloads/ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
tar xvfz ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
cd ies4linux-*
./ies4linux

http://railsgeek.com/2009/3/2/internet-explorer-free-ubuntu-linux-virtualbox My job is web application development, so I have to test my projects under most popular browsers, like Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera and Google Chrome. Firefox, Opera, GoogleChrome work great under my Ubuntu Box, and the other once work under Wine. *Internet Explorer*. It's pain to setup IE6 and IE7, because you can take a look of many bugs with render html and vml. Just forget Wine for the purpose! Microsoft give us FREE virtual PC images with IE6, IE7, IE8 aboard! Don't you believe?

What a piece of shit. Flash does not even install. Come up with something that works.

Hi Psycho,

I had the same problem before. I have fixed on my desk. Please get the last update for wine. http://www.winehq.com. Following the install instruction. Don´t forget the entry in your software location/ third party sources.

After the installation is finished, please put in your terminal :

sudo apt-get autoremove

After that, try the IE- installation again and follow the instruction. By the installation choose IE6 and if you like behind advanced IE7 and choose the desktop and menue option. The installation will be finished. Please remember your highlighted Installation path and add this on the application menue with "edit" as new item. I hope it will be work also on your installation. Bye4now

Hello, I'm quite inexperienced with unix, linux, and the whole Ubuntu environment so I thought I would share how this worked for me. Instead of the above directions, I used this successfully:

•    sudo apt-get install wine cabextract binfmt-support
•    wget http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/downloads/ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
•    tar xvfz ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
•    cd ies4linux-2.99.0.1
•    ./ies4linux

I broke apart the commands because I needed a very step-by-step approach due to my inexperience and I wanted to share this with any other newbies...

Also, I would really love to find how to install newer versions of IE (7 or 8).

Thanks!

everything worked fine for me, but the problem is that, its saying the wine version is older one and needs to update to the latest version.

and saying that some cab files are missing

HHUPD.CAB & SETUPW95.CAB & VGX.CAB -- no such files or directories.

can anyone help me with this please.

thanks in advance.

this is the error ..... The program 'ies4linux-gtk.py' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadIDChoice (invalid resource ID chosen for this connection)'. (Details: serial 7435 error_code 14 request_code 53 minor_code 0) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
